Sprint Color Class
4-week class on color, light and atmosphere
Hi! I’m excited to share this new Sprint Class on Color. I wanted to offer a more affordable option for everyone who’d like to learn with me.
TL;DR: brand new material, 4 weeks, 4-5 hrs each, group class for 10-12 artists, extra feedback during the week on Discord. Lectures, demos, feedback and paintovers, in-class assignments, suitable for any level, live sessions on Zoom. Costs: 525-450 $. Read below to learn more
WHAT IS THE CLASS ALL ABOUT?
Because this is a short class, I’m getting straight to the point from week one; I’ll show you how I choose colors for my work and how to follow these steps in an organized way.
Then we will focus on local colors and more grounded work, without making it sterile or boring.
For week three, we will cover mood and atmosphere.
The last week is about staying fresh, picking colors in a more fun, playful, and unexpected way.
I tried to make this class as no-filler as possible, so we'll cover MANY topics from week one through the last class. I’m saying this because week 1 is sometimes just an introduction with little substance, and the last week often repeats what we already covered. Not a huge fan of this approach, for me it kills momentum and motivation, so there is nothing like this here.
CLASS FORMAT
The class lasts 4 weeks, with one session each week. Classes are live on Zoom, limited to 10-12 participants, and run about 4-5 hours, with two short breaks in the middle.
I'll also have a Discord Channel to provide feedback on your WIP files once a week.
STRUCTURE
Each class goes like this:
lecture on a new topic
in-class short assignment based on a new lesson; I’ll be demoing/showing you how I’d do that assignment
quick review of the exercise
You get new homework
We do a feedback session on the previous week's homework.
Class Curriculum
1❋ Picking ColorsTopics covered: limited palette, color temperature, using reference, moving from reference colors, different ways to decide about your colors, avoiding generic colors
2❋ Local colorsTopics covered: how to paint local colors in an appealing way, diffused light, interior lighting, value grouping, more on color temperature
3❋ Mood and atmosphereTopics covered: making bold pictures, working with different lighting scenarios, cinematic look, combining design and theory
4❋ Unique and playful colorTopics covered: nature inspiration, stylized colors, what to do when you’re stuck, using color in a more playful, spontaneous manner
WHAT’S NEW, WHAT’S DIFFERENT?
This is a brand-new Class; I wrote and prepared all the materials from scratch. Of course, if you took any of my mentorships or classes in the past, there will be some intersections; some things are just essential to cover. Still, I tried to give it a new spin.
Also, I rarely show interiors and overcast lighting, and I know people like both, so this time I'll cover them!
HOMEWORK
Every week you’ll get an assignment to do 2-4 new pictures. Two is the minimum; four or more is for people who want to get more involved. It’s like a game difficulty!
Also, before our first class, you’ll still get homework! Again, I want to be mindful of time and use it productively.
Lastly, in December I’ll do a short Zoom session for anyone who wants to share their work with me, to give you extra motivation to finish any assignments after the class.
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE CLASS AND MENTORSHIP
First, the curriculum is different; I treat mentorships more as a way to teach the process: starting the work, doing a lot of it, and then finishing it in a fun but consistent way. I find this very practical, but rarely covered, so that’s my goal with mentorship!
This class is mainly about color, atmosphere, and lighting.
Mentorships are 1-1 sessions. Because of that, I spend much more time on individual feedback sessions, so feedback runs about 45-60 mins. I also have extra midweek sessions where I spend around 30 minutes on each artist’s work.
This is a group class, and we don’t have this luxury. But! I still give everyone feedback twice each class (short assignment and homework), and you can see feedback on many different works from other artists in the class.
We also have in-class assignments, which I find extremely helpful for getting the idea in your head and preparing you for the homework.
